Thamugadi was established by the Roman Empire as a planned urban settlement in the Aurès Mountains, with a grid-based street layout characteristic of Roman military towns. Adjacent to it stood Lambaesis, the headquarters of the Third Augustan Legion, which served as the administrative and military centre of the region.
