Coptos (ancient Koptos, modern Qift) was one of Egypt's most strategically important commercial centers during the Ptolemaic and Roman periods. The settlement functioned as a distribution hub where goods from Indian Ocean trade—spices, frankincense, textiles, gems, and luxury items—were transferred from the Red Sea port of Myos Hormos overland to the Nile Valley for onward transport to Alexandria and the Mediterranean.
