Coptos (ancient Koptos, modern Qift) was one of Egypt's most strategically important commercial centers during the Ptolemaic and Roman periods. The settlement functioned as a distribution hub where goods from Indian Ocean tradeβ€”spices, frankincense, textiles, gems, and luxury itemsβ€”were transferred from the Red Sea port of Myos Hormos overland to the Nile Valley for onward transport to Alexandria and the Mediterranean.
