Magnesia ad Sipylum and Sardis represent two significant urban centres of ancient Anatolia, separated by approximately 30 kilometres. Magnesia ad Sipylum emerged as a Hellenistic foundation and gained historical prominence as the location where the Roman general Scipio Africanus defeated the Seleucid king Antiochus III in 190 BCE, a confrontation that reshaped the balance of power in the eastern Mediterranean.
