Edfu served as a significant religious and administrative center throughout pharaonic, Ptolemaic, and Roman periods. The city rose to prominence during the New Kingdom as a cult center dedicated to the falcon-headed god Horus. Under Ptolemaic rule, it became known as Apollonopolis Magna, equating Horus with the Greek god Apollo.
